Getting started

There is no order you must follow and nothing to set up. Here is the shortest path from feeling stuck to getting something done.

1. Pick the program you actually need today

The two headers at the very top choose a family of software — Microsoft Office tools, or Google. Underneath, each coloured box is one program. Click the one you need right now; you can always come back for the others.

2. Take the five-question check (optional)

If you are not sure which lesson to open first, the quick check asks five plain questions about one program and then recommends a starting lesson. It is not a test, nothing is recorded unless you sign in, and you can retake it whenever you like.

3. Open the program beside the lesson

Every lesson is written to be followed along with. Open Word, Excel or Chrome in one window and the lesson in another, and do each step as you read it. People remember what their hands did far better than what their eyes read.

4. Use the accessibility bar if you need it

  • Change the language — English, Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese or Russian.
  • Make the text bigger or smaller, anywhere from 14 to 20 point.
  • Have the lesson read aloud, with the current word highlighted as it is spoken.

The bar sits above the navigation on every page, and your choices stay put as you move between lessons.

5. Sign in only if you want your progress remembered

Signing in is completely optional. Everything on the site is readable without an account — an account only adds a tick beside the lessons you have finished. See the sign-in page if you would like that.
